Reset + Recharge With The Jade Stone Ritual

Ushvani Treatment Room

A few years ago I was lucky enough to go to Reykjavik to try and get a glimpse of the Northern Lights. On a random day with a cloudy forecast and Game of Thrones kind of icy winds, my sister and I visited the Blue Lagoon, a natural geothermal spring. Decadence reigned supreme that day and we spent the day wiling away our time, topped off with a massage in a secluded annexe in the Lagoon itself.

The experience was surreal; floating around the geo thermal water, eyes turned up to the sky and watching the stars twinkling, the knots eased aways so effortlessly from underneath the water. After a day spent submerged in the thermal springs, my muscles were easier to manipulate, while I had never felt so relaxed and so close to what I imagine enlightenment must feel like.

I wish I could fly off to the Blue Lagoon, a sort of pilgrimage, just for this transformative massage. Unfortunately my perchance to treat myself for any little affliction in life doesn’t extend as far as booking a flight to Iceland on a whim. But as luck, chance or fate would have it, I found an equally therapeutic massage in Chelsea, just off Sloane Square.

The Jade Stone Ritual at Ushvani Spa is designed to bring the therapeutic Earth elements together with Ushvani’s highly popular Balinese Massage, creating a deeply relaxing and effective Spa ritual. What is the difference between a massage with jade as opposed to normal hot stone massage?

Well, have you ever felt that you just needed a reset? Not just from life, but everything; your mind, your body, your life? That is where Jade comes in; frequently used throughout Asian and Chinese medicine, jade is regarded as an effective tool to ease muscle tension, increase circulation and stimulate the lymphatic system. It is also used to increases the flow of Chi life force energy and in traditional Chinese medicine, believed to prevent a multitude of health issues and create a positive state of mind. Let’s call this a massage for the mind and body, helping you harness the power of the stones aided by an expert masseuse.

The treatment itself though not peculiar is somewhat of a surreal experience. Jade stones, which are both warm and cool, are applied directly onto the skin in an alternating fashion. My therapist, Elsa, so accommodating, warm and effusive, massaged every knot and tension that I knew was and wasn’t there. Think, a thousand fairies working away at once. I know, that might sound ostentatious but the experience of a two hour massage with the peculiar experience of going hot and cold at once is, quite frankly, unbelievable.

If you are feeling especially generous that day and in need of an extended self-care package, you are also able to complete the massage with a warm Coconut and Kemiri Body Mask with a soothing facial and scalp massage performed using cool Jade stones. This relaxing facial and scalp massage provides a contouring and lifting effect that also stimulates the lymphatic system, restoring the skin’s natural radiance. And you know, it actually works. After a horrific day of deadlines and life extremities, I was left feeling uplifted in every shape and form.
